  1. Hi Michelle! I would have to say Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing was my favorite from childhood. Now? Just finished The Lightning Thief series, and thought they were fabulous!

  2. My favorite jumps to mind right away - Where the Red Fern Grows. of course, there's lots of others. I like the look of the new blog!

  3. My favorite series of all time would be Harry Potter, Narnia, and A Wrinkle in Time. For recent favorites, I have to love Ingrid Law's SAVVY and also SCUMBLE. Um, and a whole lot more!

  5. During the grade school time in my life I read The Bobbsey Twins and also The Happy Hollisters. Since I've taught my own children, my horizons broadened to include books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Anne of Green Gables, Little Britches, along with the Boys Against The Girls series. But a favorite book of our kids and one that is difficult to lay down is Big Smoke Mountain by Lewis B. Miller

  7. Some great books! Keep them coming!

Katy, Anne is one of my favorites, too. (Although I didn't discover her until I was married!)

Thanks for the compliment, Laura! It's all my husband's doing. I'm afraid those brownies my wreck my diet, though!

  9. I'm going to have to go with a tie: From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and Anne of Green Gables. Love them both!

Recent, I really loved When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead.

  10. Shellie,
Would you believe they now have The Boxcar Children as graphic novels? Yep, they do!

  11. My favorite middle grade reads are the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Lots of fun to read and a very interesting take on mythology and the modern world.

  12. I loved any sort of mystery as a kid. Sometimes we'd go to Adventure Book Store after church and I'd spend a long time turning the squeaky display towers just looking at all the juicy ghosty titles. Holly Beth Walker's Meg series was my favorite beginning with Meg and the Disappearing Diamonds.

  13. I loved The Three Investigators... I think it was a children's Alfred Hitchcock series. The cover of The Mystery of the Whispering Mummy still scares me!

  14. Thanks for the recs, friends! I guess I haven't listed mine. Judy Blume (everything by her) tops my young reader list. She was so scandalous! :) But my all time favorite was Harriet The Spy. Still have the copy from my 5th grade class! (Sorry, Mrs. Clarke! I didn't MEAN to steal it! Kept it over the summer and then we moved...)

  15. I liked the Hardy Boys series, especially later when they came out with the whole "choose your own adventure" books. Once I got to the end, then I would go back through and choose alternate endings until I had exhausted all the possibilities. I know, whats the use of reading a "choose your own adventure" book if you go back through and read all the different adventures. I guess it just makes it so that it's four or five books in one.

  16. My recommendation: Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier!

  17. I had so many favorite books as a kid but I'm going to go with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I was so fascinated when I read that book.

  19. Hi Michelle! Your books sound like a lot of fun. I just read the book Drizzle -- it was sweet and magical. As a child I loved Charlotte's Web, and also A Summer to Die by Lois Lowry.

  23. I really loved the Trixie Belden books as a kid, and The Castle in the Attic, and The Midwife's Apprentice, and Ella Enchanted, and sooooooooo many others!

Recent favorites include The Book of the Maidservant, When You Reach Me, and Plain Kate.

  24. As a kid I loved mysteries, I still do as an adult. I loved Trixie Belden. The best Christmas present I ever received was books 6 - 14 (I think that was the end at that time) My mother couldn't believe I read and reread all the books over my Christmas break. I also love Nancy Drew, especially the original (1930s-40) before they were sanitized in the 1960s when I began reading them.

I love the Harry Potter Series.

Loved Harriet the Spy and The Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

I think I could go on, but perhaps I should just put up a post on my own blog.

  25. I was a total Nancy Drew-a-holic. My latest fav is Cynthia Lord's RULES. We mainstream children with autism into our regular ed. classrooms at my elementary school, and I have yet to find a better teaching tool for tolerance than RULES.

  26. I was a Nancy Drew fan too, for a brief, heady period -- my babysitting money bought almost all of the original Carolyn Keene books (I was devastated to learn she was a man). My favorite books were A Wrinkle in Time and the Space Cat series (very juvenile, but they had cats in them, wearing spacesuits, and who could resist that?). I also enjoyed the Ramona series and The Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler -- after which I longed to live in a big museum.

  27. How cruel of you to ask for only ONE favorite book! If I had to choose, I'd probably go with either Lily's Crossing by Patricia Reilly Giff or Bloomability by Sharon Creech. Both feature strong female protagonists who love to read and imagine, and they have quite the personalities!
